Future Mission Facilities FAQ

East Taieri Church is exploring future mission facilities that will help us serve our community, support ministry, and provide welcoming spaces for worship and connection. Below are answers to some common questions about the project.

Why is East Taieri Church considering a building project?

This project is about supporting the mission of the church, not simply improving buildings. The goal is to create spaces that better serve worship, community life, hospitality, children, youth, and everyday ministry.

What is the project hoping to achieve?

The proposed concept focuses on making the church site more flexible and welcoming. Key ideas include a more spacious foyer, improved kitchen and toilet facilities, better meeting and office spaces, and a café-style space overlooking the Taieri.

Will the historic church still be used?

Yes. The historic church remains central to the plan and is intended to continue as the main worship space. The redevelopment is designed to enhance how the building is used while retaining its character and significance.

What changes are being considered for the church building?

The concept plan includes ideas such as a new entrance through the existing vestry, a larger entry foyer, improved overflow space, upgraded amenities, and refurbishment of the historic church. The roof and stained glass windows are also part of the overall redevelopment discussion.

How much is the project expected to cost?

The revised concept plan was estimated at around $4.3 million. This figure includes major refurbishment work as well as roof replacement and restoration of the historic church features.

Is the building earthquake prone?

No. A Detailed Seismic Assessment completed in 2020 concluded that the church is not earthquake prone and is expected to perform at 80% of New Building Standard. That means major seismic strengthening is not required, although some minor strengthening will happen while the roof is being replaced.

Will church services continue during the project?

The church remains active during the planning process, with services and ministry continuing across current church locations and activities. Any construction timetable would be communicated clearly before work begins.

Why not build a completely new building?

The current proposal focuses on improving and extending the existing site so that it can continue to serve the church community well. This approach allows the church to preserve its heritage while making the facilities more practical for modern ministry needs.
